Defence of the Realm

DEFENCE OF THE REALM

As a citizen of the United Kingdom I require my government to do all that is necessary to defend the UK from agression. In that role I wish them to have the most most cost effective means of acheiving that aim.

Today that is nuclear weapons. It might be MAD - mutally assured destruction - but is works.

I feel free though to disagree on the means. Having the bombs at see on the end of sophisticated fireworks on a submarine is a rather expensive way of doing it. Especailly when they could be on the end of a much cheaper cruise missile. Especially when the cruise missile shares space with torpedoes on a hunter killer submarine that can cruise the oceans of the world keeping our trade routes open.

Much more effective would be to have them in space. As things stand the UK does not have its own fireworks for putting thing up in orbit. Also it would be difficult for them to be launched from the home island.

Rather than spending a lot of money on an underwater boat carrying missiles on fireworks the money should be use to develope a space plane. A plane that can take off from the home islands, go into orbit and place bombs that can descend on anyone actively attacking the UK. At the same time such planes would be able to take over the space market, making all the current fireworks launch systems redundant at a stroke. Until the competition came along this would certainly pay for the in space defence system.

So let us get working the hydrogen powered launchers and get Dan Dare up there looking after the interests of the UK
